Carbon Fiber Kayak Skeg
This kayak is equiped with a retractable skeg. The skeg will stiffen up the tracking when paddling in high winds, but it can be retracted into the boat when responsive maneuverability is desired. The skeg is constructed of carbon fiber and fiberglass. A stainless steel control cable extends up to beside the cockpit for easy tuning of the skeg exposure.
The shark fin shape like those used on surf boards is very efficient, providing good bite with minimal drag. If you should surf over a rock the skeg will automatically kick back up into the boat to protect it from damage. To further protect it, the skeg is offset from the centerline of the boat by about an inch. This serves to almost completely eliminate jamming due to sand and pebbles. It does not effect the boat that it is off to one side. I have found this skeg system to be extremely reliable.
