Bookmatched Mahogany microBootlegger Kayak
I have long appreciated the contrast of natural wood set off by high tech materials. The microBootlegger was custom made for a customer on Cape Cod with book-matched mahogany reinforced with carbon fiber fabric. The figured maple trim outlines the rich red mahogany over the glistening carbon fiber. The original owner no longer has room to store this beautiful boat and it is now available to a good home for much less than it would cost new.
The mahogany on the deck was all milled from a single board and installed in place in the same order the material came off the board. This creates a gradually shifting repeating pattern on the deck that is mirrored on both sides.
Reinforced on the inside with carbon fiber and with light fiberglass cloth on the outside, this kayak is lightweight and strong. The wood is protected under the fiberglass and epoxy so is not subjected to water and will not rot. The final finish is buffed automotive clear coat for a durable deep liquid appearance.
This kayak was featured in the 2024 Netflix Limited Series “The Perfect Couple” staring Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber. Nick Schade is the “Nick in Groton” mentioned in the scene with Liev Schreiber as Tag Winbury and Jack Reynor as Thomas Winbury.
